What I Wish I Knew Before Moving Out at 18

Moving out sounds exciting… until you realize how much responsibility comes with it.

Here’s what no one tells you.

💸 Everything Costs More Than You Think

Rent isn’t the only bill.

You’ll also pay for:

  • Groceries $$$
  • Utilities $$-$$$ depending on the time of year and where you live
  • WiFi $$
  • Gas $$
  • Insurance (vehicle and renters) $$$
  • Phone $$
  • Random things you didn’t plan for $-$$$ There always seems to be a friend celebrating something, OR a last min trip (which I highly advise you do before you start settling into life #kids)

These are just some of the monthly bills. But don’t forget you will have to furnish you apartment and you may have to do laundry at a laundromat, so you’ll need money for that also every week or 2

🧼 Cleaning Never Ends

No one is coming to clean up after you anymore.

You’ll need to:

  • Do dishes daily
  • Take out trash
  • Clean your bathroom
  • Do laundry regularly

🍝 You’ll Eat the Same Meals A Lot

Cooking every day is unrealistic at first. And don’t order out all the time, that cost way more than grocery shopping

Start with:

  • Easy meals
  • Meal prepping
  • Simple grocery lists

😴 You’re Fully Responsible for Your Schedule

No one is waking you up or telling you what to do.

Time management becomes everything.

🧠 It’s Okay to Feel Overwhelmed

This is a big life change. You’re learning independence in real time. And, it’s ok to call home for advice and to check in every so often.

❤️ Final Advice

Take it one day at a time. You don’t have to have everything figured out.

👉 Save this if you’re moving out soon—you’ll thank yourself later.
